Anti-wrinkle injections are the most requested non-surgical treatment in the UK — and also the most misunderstood. Some people expect them to erase every line on the face. Others avoid them entirely, worried they'll end up looking frozen. The truth sits comfortably in between. Here's an honest explanation from our Birmingham aesthetics team of what anti-wrinkle injections realistically do, what they simply cannot fix, and how to decide whether they're right for you.

What Anti-Wrinkle Injections Actually Are

Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified form of botulinum toxin, a prescription-only medicine that has been used in medicine for decades. Injected in tiny, precisely measured amounts into specific facial muscles, it temporarily reduces how strongly those muscles contract. Less movement means the skin above creases less — so the lines that form when you frown, squint or raise your eyebrows soften.

Treatment takes around 10–15 minutes. The needles are very fine, most people describe it as a quick scratch, and there's no downtime beyond avoiding exercise, alcohol and lying flat for the rest of the day.

What They Can Do

Soften dynamic lines

This is what they do best. Dynamic lines are the ones caused by muscle movement — horizontal forehead lines, the vertical "elevens" between the brows, and crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Relaxing those muscles smooths the lines noticeably and lets the skin settle.

Slow down the lines you haven't got yet

Repeated creasing over years is what turns a temporary line into a permanent one. Reducing that daily folding can help delay the point at which a dynamic line becomes etched in — which is why many people start in their thirties rather than waiting until lines are deep.

Treat more than just wrinkles

  • Jaw clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism) — treating the masseter muscles can ease jaw ache, morning headaches and the tooth wear that comes with grinding. As a clinic with dentists and aesthetic practitioners under one roof, this is something we assess properly rather than in isolation.
  • A gummy smile — a small, carefully placed dose can reduce how far the upper lip lifts.
  • Bunny lines — the creases that appear across the bridge of the nose when you scrunch it.
  • Excessive underarm sweating — a well-established medical use of the same treatment.
  • A subtle brow lift — relaxing the muscles that pull the brow down can lift the outer brow by a few millimetres.

Look like you, only fresher

Done well, nobody should be able to tell you've had anything done. The "frozen" look is a dosing and placement problem, not an inevitable outcome. We deliberately treat conservatively at your first appointment — it's straightforward to add a little more at your review, and impossible to take it away.

Give it two weeks. Anti-wrinkle injections don't work instantly. You'll usually notice something from day three to five, with the full effect settling at around two weeks. That's why every treatment here includes a complimentary two-week review — we assess the result properly and top up if any area needs it.

What They Can't Do

Remove lines that are there when your face is still

If a line is clearly visible when your face is completely relaxed, it has become a static line — a crease set into the skin itself. Anti-wrinkle injections will soften it and stop it deepening, but they won't erase it. Deep static lines often respond better to dermal filler, skin boosters or resurfacing treatments, sometimes alongside injections rather than instead of them.

Lift sagging skin or replace lost volume

Jowls, heaviness along the jawline, hollow cheeks and deep nose-to-mouth folds come from loss of collagen, fat and bone support — not muscle activity. No amount of botulinum toxin will address them, and an honest practitioner will tell you so rather than treating you anyway.

Improve skin quality

Sun damage, pigmentation, open pores, dullness, acne scarring and fine crepey texture are skin problems, not muscle problems. Daily SPF, a sensible skincare routine and treatments aimed at the skin itself are what move the needle there.

Last forever

Results typically last three to four months, sometimes a little longer once you've had several rounds. Movement returns gradually rather than switching back overnight. Most people choose to repeat treatment two to three times a year; if you stop, your face simply returns to how it would have been.

Our Clinical Verdict

Anti-wrinkle injections are excellent at one specific job: softening the lines caused by facial movement, and slowing the rate at which those lines become permanent. They are not a facelift, a volume treatment or a skincare routine. If your main concern is forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet or jaw clenching, they're likely to serve you very well. If it's sagging, hollowing or skin texture, you need a different plan — and we'd rather tell you that at the consultation than take your money.

Safety, Regulation and Choosing a Clinic

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. That means it must be prescribed for you personally by a qualified prescriber following a face-to-face consultation — not sold as a package deal or arranged over social media. It is also a criminal offence in England to give anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers for cosmetic purposes to anyone under 18.

Before booking anywhere, ask three questions: who is prescribing the medicine, what are their medical qualifications and registration, and what happens if something doesn't go to plan? A reputable clinic will answer all three without hesitation. At The Yardley Clinic, treatments are carried out by medically trained practitioners in a CQC-regulated setting, with a full consultation, a written record and a follow-up review as standard.

Side effects are usually minor and short-lived — small pinprick marks, mild redness or tenderness for a day or so. Less common effects such as temporary eyelid or brow heaviness are almost always down to technique and dosing, which is why who treats you matters more than what you pay.
