Most of us know we should see the dentist regularly — but how regularly is regularly? Every six months? Once a year? Only when something hurts? The honest answer is that it depends on you. Here's what our Birmingham dental team wants you to know about how often to have a dental check-up, what actually happens at one, and why it's the cheapest way to protect your smile.

So, How Often Do You Need a Check-Up?

There's no single rule for everyone. National guidance in England recommends that the gap between check-ups is set according to your individual risk of dental disease, and for adults that can be anywhere from every three months to every two years. In practice:

  • Every 3–6 months if you have gum disease, a history of decay, a dry mouth, wear braces or aligners, smoke, or have diabetes.
  • Every 6–12 months for most adults with a moderate risk of problems.
  • Up to every 24 months only for adults who are consistently low-risk — healthy gums, no new decay, excellent home care — and only if your dentist agrees.

Your dentist will recommend an interval after your first exam. If you've never been told yours, simply ask.

What Happens at a Dental Check-Up?

A good check-up is far more than "a look around". At The Yardley Clinic, your appointment typically includes:

1. A conversation about you

We'll ask about your general health, medications, habits and any concerns — a sore tooth, bleeding gums, grinding at night, or a smile you'd like to change.

2. A thorough examination

We check each tooth for decay, cracks, worn or leaking fillings and signs of grinding. We also assess your gums and bite.

3. An oral cancer screening

A quick visual and tactile check of your tongue, cheeks, throat and neck. Mouth cancer is far easier to treat when it's found early, and a routine check-up is often where it's first spotted.

4. X-rays where they're needed

Some problems — decay between teeth, bone loss, infection at the root — can't be seen by eye. X-rays are only taken when they're clinically justified, not automatically at every visit.

5. A clear plan

You'll leave knowing exactly what (if anything) needs doing, in what order, and what it will cost — with no pressure.

Good to know: early problems rarely hurt. Decay and gum disease can progress for months without pain, which is exactly why waiting until something hurts so often ends in a bigger, costlier treatment.

Check-Up vs Hygienist Appointment: What's the Difference?

They work together but do different jobs. The dentist examines and diagnoses. The hygienist professionally cleans your teeth, removing the plaque and tartar that brushing can't reach, and coaches you on the best technique for your mouth. Many patients benefit from having both, and our guide to why the hygienist matters explains why.

Why Regular Check-Ups Are Worth It

  • Catch problems early — a small filling is quicker, cheaper and more comfortable than a root canal or extraction.
  • Protect your gums — gum disease is a leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it's usually painless in the early stages.
  • Spot mouth cancer early — when treatment is most effective.
  • Keep cosmetic work looking its best — bonding, whitening and aligner results last longer with professional monitoring.
  • Peace of mind — knowing where you stand is a relief in itself.

Nervous? You're Not Alone

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off check-ups. If that's you, tell us when you book. We'll take things at your pace, explain every step before we do it, and stop whenever you need a break. There's no judgement about how long it's been — we simply start from where you are today.

Our Clinical Verdict

For most adults, a check-up every six to twelve months is a sensible rhythm — more often if you have gum disease or a higher risk of decay, and less often only if your dentist confirms you're low-risk. If you haven't been in over a year, or you have bleeding gums, sensitivity or a tooth that "just doesn't feel right", don't wait for it to hurt. Book a check-up.
